Mr SNOWDON (3:27 PM) —Mr Speaker, you will recall that I have raised with you the issue of the bark petitions, particularly the Yirrkala bark petitions—firstly on 13 April last year, then on 12 October last year and then on 7 December last year. On 7 December you informed the House that you had sought further legal advice on the implications of the October legal opinion provided to me by the Attorney. That legal opinion was to be about other papers and documents involved in the day-to-day work of the House. You then wrote to me on 18 January stating that a response was in progress and that you were waiting for further legal advice. When do you expect to receive this advice and when do you expect to be able to advise the House of the implications of the 9 October legal opinion so that I can advise the copyright owners at Yirrkala?

Mr SPEAKER —I am unable to respond in detail to the member for Northern Territory until the House resumes for its May or June sittings. I can, however, indicate to him that I am still waiting further legal opinion.
