Mr Latham asked the Minister for Transport and Regional Services, upon notice, on 7 December 2000:

Further to the answer to question No. 1196, (Hansard, 3 April 2000, page 15103) how many (a) passenger and (b) freight trains are expected to run each day on the federally funded Alice Springs to Darwin railway at the (i) commencement and (ii) forecast peak of the line's operation.


Mr Anderson (Deputy Prime Minister) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

The Commonwealth has been advised by the AustralAsia Railway Corporation (AARC), set up by the South Australian and Northern Territory Governments to manage delivery of the project, that:

(a) the preferred tenderer for the line, the Asia Pacific Transport Consortium, has not advised of plans for the running of passenger trains at this stage;

(b)(i) 1 freight train each way;

(ii) 2 freight trains each way.
