Ms Jann McFarlane
asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 10 May 2000:
(1) What were the administrative costs to process claims for compensation for defective administration made to the Australian Tax Office (ATO) in each year since 1996-97.
(2) How many claims ended being heard in court in year.
(3) What were the legal costs for defending any court action in each year.
(4) How many hours were spent by the ATO's legal section working on these claims in each year.

—The Assistant Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:
(1) The information sought is not immediately ascertainable and would involve an undue diversion of resources to collect.
(2) Claims concerning defective administration are dealt with through the ATO complaints system rather than the court system.
(3) See (2) above.
