To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled.

As Australian citizens we hereby express our strong disapproval of the proposed legislation to introduce a national identity card, known as the Australia Card.

The reasons given for the necessity of such a card are unconvincing inasmuch as existing provisions, if properly implemented, are adequate to prevent tax evasion and social security fraud.

Any advantages the card will have will be more than offset by the severe restrictions it will impose on the civil liberties of the population, and by its penal provisions which are unduly harsh and repressive.

It is therefore our wish that you, as one of our elected representatives, take immediate steps to oppose the forthcoming legislation, and to ensure that all similar legislation which infringes upon our democratic rights be summarily dismissed.
