To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled. The Petition of the undersigned citizens of Australia respectfully showeth:

1. That the undersigned believe freedom of thought, expression and choice is in jeopardy by the action of minority groups, to ban the sale and hire of video movies with a rating of ``R'' classification notwithstanding that such ``R'' movies could be shown at cinemas and on television.

2. That examples of titles of video movies with ``R'' classification include such well known movies as:

``One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'' (Jack Nicholson)

``First Blood'' and ``Cobra'' (Sylvester Stallone)

``Dirty Harry'' and ``Sudden Impact'' (Clint Eastwood)

(`Make my day!')

``Midnight Express''

``The Godfather''

``Apocalypse Now'' (Marlon Brando)

``Crimes of Passion'' (Kathleen Turner & Anthony Perkins)

``Mad Max'' (Mel Gibson)

``The Deer Hunter'' (Robert DeNiro & Meryl Streep)

3. That we the undersigned believe that very little thought has been given to the devastating consequences of the economic impact on the video retailing industry of banning the sale and hire of ``R'' rated movies.

4. That we the undersigned are concerned video library members, all over the age of 18 years, many of whom are parents who believe that they should retain certain basic freedoms namely:

(a) the right to view video movies of their own individual choice and not that imposed by Governments or minority groups;

(b) The right to exercise their own discretion and control over their own childrens' viewing habits in lieu of the control sought to be imposed by Governments and minority groups.

Your Petitioners therefore humbly pray that all legislation proposed to the banning of the sale of hire ``R'' classification video movies be immediately stayed pending:

(a) an informed public debate on an issue which in essence involves freedom of thought, expression and choice; and

(b) a thorough review is made of the economic impact of banning ``R'' classified movies on the video retail industry.

And we pray you may be conscious of God's sovereign purpose for our Nation and your petitioners in duty bound will ever pray.
