(Question No. 5523)


Mr Sinclair asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 28 May 1987:

(1) Have any officers of the Minister's department or statutory authorities under his responsibility visited Libya since March 1983; if so, (a) when did each visit take place, (b) what was the purpose of the visit, and (c) who incurred the expense of the visit.


Mr Hayden —The answer to the right honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes, officers from the Department of Foreign Affairs have visited Libya on official business since March 1983. Records are not available of private visits undertaken by officers.

(a) Records available to the Department indicate the official visits were undertaken in May 1983 and June 1986 by officers of the Australian Embassy at Rome.

(b) The purpose of the visits was to provide consular assistance to Australians in Libya.

(c) Costs were met by the Department.
