(Question No. 5387)

Mr Connolly asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 11 May 1987:

Is there a Defence Offsets Committee; if so which Departments are represented on it and when did the Committee last meet.

Mr Beazley —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) There is no Defence Offsets Committee as such however the terms of reference of the Defence Industry Committee (DIC) have been expanded to include the function to oversight the defence offsets programme and advise the Minister for Defence on matters relating to his functional responsibilities to the Defence Offsets Programme and Australian Industry Involvement in Defence purchases.

In addition meetings of officers from appropriate areas occur on a regular basis as required.

There is a standing offsets Interdepartmental Committee jointly chaired by Departments of Industry, Technology and Commerce (DITAC) and Defence, on which a number of Departments are represented. The IDC last met on Wednesday 29 April 1987. Also a Defence/DITAC working party has been established to co-ordinate offsets policy and its operation. The working party will meet again on 5 June 1987.
