Mr Rocher asked the Minister for Housing and Construction, upon notice, on 7 May 1987:

(1) How many consultant architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and other specialists were commissioned by his Department to complete designs or tender documentation during 1985/86.

(2) In how many projects were specialists referred to in part (1) involved.

(3) What proportion of the design workload of the Department was placed with private practitioners in 1985/86.

(4) In 1985/86 in each State and Territory, (a) how many consultants were engaged on new projects, (b) what was the value of projects and (c) what proportion of the design workload for projects was placed with private practitioners.


Mr West —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

1. My Department placed 626 new commissions in 1985/86 with architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and other specialists to undertake design and documentation activities; the figures do not include commissions solely for technical advice.

2. There were some 458 new projects involved.

3. My Department placed 59% of its design workload with private practitioners in 1985/86.

4. The following table details for each Regional Office for 1985/86:

(a) how many consultants were engaged on new projects;

(b) the value of those new projects; and

(c) the proportion of the design workload placed with private practitioners
