(Question No. 5174)


Mr Scott asked the Minister for Health, upon notice, on 17 March 1987:

(1) Has his attention been drawn to an organisation called the International Life Sciences Institute, Australian Branch (ILSI Australia).

(2) Is he able to say whether ILSI Australia is an industry funded organisation, with an annual subscription fee of $1500 per company, and whose major supporters are Amatil Ltd, Coca-Cola Australia and CSR Sugar Division.

(3) Is he able to say whether the President of the Board of Trustees of ILSI Australia is Professor R.A. Edwards, and that one of the Trustees is Dr J.H.B. Christian.

(4) Is, or was, Professor Edwards Chairman of the Food Standards Committee of the National Health and Medical Research Council and Dr Christian a member of that Committee.

(5) Is he able to say whether Dr Christian is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency's International Consultative Group on Food Irradiation.


Dr Blewett —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes.

(2) My Department has advised that the following information is included in the information brochure published by ILSI Australia:

(a) `ILSI is a public, non profit, scientific organisation'.

(b) The ILSI Australia branch was formed in 1983 and its fifteen members represent a cross-section of Australian food, pharmaceutical and toiletry companies including Amatil Ltd, Coca-Cola Australia and CSR Sugar Division.

The Secretary of ILSI Australia has advised my Department that all member companies pay the same annual subscription fee of $1,750.

(3) ILSI Australia has stated that Professor R. A. Edwards is President of ILSI Australia and Chairman of its Board of Trustees and that Dr J. H. B. Christian is a Trustee of ILSI.

(4) Yes.

(5) I am advised that Dr Christian is not a member of the joint United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation/International Atomic Energy Agency/World Health Organisation, International Consultative Group on Food Irradiation.
