(Question No. 388)

Mr MacKellar asked the Minister for Science, upon notice, on 22 March 1985:

(1) What are the reasons for Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation's budget being set at $30,791,000 in 1984-85 from an expenditure of $40,760,900 in 1983-84.

(2) What adjustments have been required by CSIRO to stay within this appropriation.

Mr Duffy —The answer to the honourable member's question is:

(1) The figures used by the honourable member refer only to that component of CSIRO's budget that is appropriated under Appropriation Bill No. 2 for Capital Works. The reduction in this appropriation between the two years is due mainly to the lower costs in 1984-85 of two major construction projects, namely the Australian National Animal Health Laboratory and the Oceanographic Research Vessel.

(2) Full details of the variations in the costs of all items of CSIRO's capital expenditure between the two years are displayed on Page 8 of the Explanatory Notes for CSIRO's Estimates of Expenditure 1984/85 tabled as part of the budget documents in 1984.
