(Question No. 42)

Mr Jull asked the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism, upon notice, on 22 February 1985:

(1) Did he or his Department make a grant to the Australian Recreational Fishing Confederation or to its President, Mr Graham Pike, to stage a meeting in Brisbane on or about 9 December 1984; if so, what was the amount of the grant.

(2) For what specific purposes or expenditure was the grant made.

(3) Was part of the purpose of this meeting to keep in touch with individuals and organisations in the States; if so, why were the President and Secretary of the Queensland Amateur Fishing Council, representing amateur fishermen in that State, refused entry to the meeting.

Mr John Brown —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) No.

(2) There was no specific grant made.

(3) The Australian Recreational Fishing Conference is comprised of the seven national organisations representing the various types of recreational fishing and fishing interests. It is therefore a peak national body, autonomous under its constitution and I am not involved in its internal workings. This being so, I do not know of the circumstances surrounding the meetings of the Confederation Executive in Brisbane in December last year. I do note, however, that in his letter in the Courier-Mail of 30 January 1985, the Confederation President states that the Chairman and Secretary of the Queensland Amateur Fishing Council did attend at the time of the Brisbane meeting and spent several hours in discussions of mutual interest with the Confederation executive. It may interest the honourable member to know that I have been informed that the Confederation is currently giving very active consideration to creating an associate membership category in its constitution which would include State and Territory organisations representing recreational fishing.
