(Question No. 218)

Mr Ruddock asked the Minister for Science, upon notice, on 20 March 1985:

(1) How many employees of the Minister's Department receive a language availability performance allowance.

(2) Is any record kept of the languages spoken by the staff and the ability of such staff receiving this allowance to meet the needs of the clients of the Minister's Department.

(3) What operational procedures are in place to ensure that all such skills for which allowances are paid are effectively used in pursuit of the Minister's Department's objectives.

Mr Barry Jones —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Forty-five.

(2) Yes.

(3) Procedures in place are those set out in the Patent Office Patent Treaty Examiners Manual. The allowance is paid only to examiners who have been directed to perform translations on a regular and continuing basis in accordance with Public Service Board Determination 63 of 1984.
