Mr SMITH —I ask the Special Minister of State: When did the Government first learn that the New South Wales Police interceptions had in fact continued from 1981 until 1984? How many interceptions took place in this period? What action has been taken to ascertain the identity of those involved, the instructions given to set up the interceptions, and the use made of those interceptions?

Mr YOUNG —I think the honourable member may be a bit confused as to how and when the information--

Mr Smith —I am not confused.

Mr YOUNG —The honourable member has plenty of time. I think he may be a bit confused as to how and when the information may have come to the Government. A check will be made. I can give the House this assurance as a result of an assurance that has been given to me by the Australian Federal Police Commissioner: There has been no involvement by the Federal Police in any of these matters since he has been the Federal Police Commissioner, not since this Government came to power. If there is any other information I can get for the honourable member I will get it to him as soon as possible.
