Mr MACPHEE —My question is directed to the Prime Minister. In the light of the statement contained in his letter of 25 January to Mr Lange that accepting visits from nuclear-powered and possibly nuclear-armed ships is central to the ANZUS alliance and the fact that at least one State has declared itself nuclear free, will the Prime Minister give a guarantee that visits by such ships will be welcomed in every State of Australia?

Mr HAWKE —One could not expect much more from a question which has its premise wrong. The letter was not dated 25 January; as I recall it was dated 10 January. As far as the position of Australia is concerned in regard to the access of visiting warships from the United States, there is complete amity between ourselves and the United States Government.
