To the Honourable the Speaker and the Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled. The petition of certain concerned citizens of the Southern N.S.W. Coal Regions shows:

1. that approximately 600 mineworkers employed by Kembla Coal & Coke at its Coalcliff and Darkes Forest Mines are threatened with retrenchment,

2. that further retrenchments are threatened at mines in the Burragorang Valley of N.S.W. and in the West Moreton Field in Queensland, and

3. that these threatened retrenchments constitute:

(i) a crisis in the Coal Industry, and

(ii) a major threat to the economic and social stability of the regions dependent on these mines.

Your petitioners therefore pray that the Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, and the Minister for Resources and Energy, Senator Walsh, take immediate action to:

1. halt these threatened sackings,

2. implement Labor policy and establish a National Coal Authority, and

3. increase Government intervention in the mines if the companies refuse to withdraw the threatened retrenchments.
