The Attorney General, in partnership with David Jackson QC, will argul: for election of a President by the people. David Jackson QC is a leading constitutional lawyer who has appeared regularly before the High COll~1. in some of the landmark cases of that jurisdiction.
In taking the side of selection of a PH~sident by Parliament, Gareth E v an~ will support the view of the Ad visory Council on the Republic which w as appointed by the Keating Labor Government and which is still policy of the ALP. He is joined by Sir Maurice Byers, a former Solicitor-General
who was appointed to that post by the Whitlam Government. These days, Sir Maurice is in pl'iv~te practice at the NSW Bar.
The debate will be chaired by Senator Helen Coonan who is a barrister and member uf the NSVI Bar Associatioll .
