Senator POYSER (VICTORIA) - Is the Minister representing the Minister for Social Security aware of public reaction in favour of the Government's White Paper on its health insurance program? Does the reaction indicate that the changes incorporated in the White Paper should satisfy legitimate and reasonable critics of the scheme?

Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) - I have seen comments in recent times by a number of organisations and people. I can assure the honourable senator that the Government has been greatly encouraged by the favourable reaction that appears to be developing to its White Paper. I am sure honourable senators would have read with interest this morning the statements of support made by 9 Anglican bishops and the favourable editorial comments in last Friday's Melbourne 'Age'. The Melbourne Age' stated that it would be a tragedy if the proposed legislation were to die in the Senate. To the Government also that would be a tragedy and I suggest to honourable senators that they would do well to contemplate the reasoned arguments advanced in the White Paper on this matter.
