Senator WRIGHT (TASMANIA) - I direct a question to the Minister in Charge of Commonwealth Activities in Education and Research. It has reference to the Martin report. At page 223 of that report a list of cash grants is set out in respect of institutes of colleges. Briefly, a distinction is drawn in the report between technical colleges that grant diplomas and those that do not. Cash grants totalling £5 million are to be made available for those granting diplomas and the report then recommends grants of £1.25 million for other technical colleges. The effect of that has been to exclude Tasmania from the list. What is the reason for the Ministerial statement approving these grants for institutes of colleges and refusing to approve grants for other institutions among which the Tasmanian technical colleges might rank?
