Senator COLLINGS - ThePrime Minister has supplied the following answers : -

1.   Under the provisions of the Geneva International Convention, prisoners of war may be required to work during captivity. No definite information is yet available to the Commonwealth Government in respect of the conditions of employment of Australian prisoners of war in Germany and Italy, but reports on that subject have been requested from the appropriate authorities overseas, particularly with reference to recent published statements that Australian prisoners of war are being employed under harsh conditions at Benghazi. German and Italian prisoners of war are not given a life of leisure at their camps in Australia. Large numbers of them are required to perform a wide variety of work in connexion with the maintenance and development of their camps.

2.   The matter is under consideration.
