Senator DUNCAN-HUGHES (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice -

1.   How many gas-masks have been issued to thu various States?

2.   What arrangements have been made for the public to be instructed in the use of them?

3.   How many persons approximately have to date received such instruction?

Senator Sir GEORGE PEARCE (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - The Minister for Defence has supplied the following answers : -

1.   No gas-masks have yet been issued to State governments. There is a limited stock held in military ordnance stores in each State, a proportion of which can be made available for training when actually required.

2.   It is not the policy of the Government to undertake the instruction of the general public at this stage. In New South Wales, where the preliminary organization exists, officers of the Defence Department have conducted numerous courses and classes for key personnel.

3.   Eight hundred personnel of key organizations.
