Senator CRAWFORD (QueenslandHonorary Minister) . - The same objection which I raised in connexion with the request moved by Senator Needham applies in this instance. If Senator Lynch, who says that the gold-mining industry has been specially singled out for the imposition of very heavy duties, will peruse the rates set out against other items in the schedule, he will see that under that following the one we are now considering, a duty 5 per cent, higher than that imposed on mining machinery is provided. It is very doubtful . whether the duties imposed on mining machinery are responsible in any degree for the present unfortunate position in the gold-mining industry; nearly all of the mines are fully equipped with modern machinery, which was paid for at a time when the companies were prosperous, and when big dividends were paid. As I stated when speaking on Senator Needham's request, it cannot be claimed that the cost of mining machinery is responsible. In these circumstances, I cannot accept the request moved by Senator Lynch.
