Senator NEEDHAM - In view of the possibility that the Senate may not be sitting to-morrow, I ask the Minister of Defence the following questions : -

1.   Was there any representative of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers present when Engineer-Overseer Barnes made his investigation into the report of the armament artificer for increased pay?

2.   If not, why not?

3.   Hasany attentionbeen paid to the recommendations of Captain E. Harding, asking that favorable consideration be given to the request of the armament artificer?

Senator PEARCE - I shall endeavour to obtain the information for the honorable senator during the course of the day.

Senator LONG - The answer givento my question was not, I think, sufficiently clear. The Minister informed the Senate that twelve non-commissioned officers applied for these appointments, and that only eight accepted. Am I to understand that only eight were qualified ?

Senator Pearce - No.

Senator LONG - Only eight applied?

Senator Pearce - The positions were offered to senior members of the noncommissioned staff, and only eight accepted.

Senator LONG - In all the States ?

Senator Pearce - Yes.
