Senator STORY (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) - In the course of an interview published in the Baily Herald, of Adelaide, on the 18th of this month, Mr. 0. H. Stevens, the Commonwealth Returning Officer for the State of South Australia, is reported to have said -

Instructions have been issued by the head office in Melbourne that canvassers are not to leave cards at houses, so that we cannot boblamed for this not being done.

Will the Minister in charge of the administration of the Electoral Act say whether those instructions were issued, and, if so, by whose authority?

Senator McCOLL - I am not aware that such instructions have been issued. If they were, they were issued on the authority of the Chief Electoral Officer, who has sole charge of these proceedings.
