Mr INNES (MELBOURNE, VICTORIA) - My question is directed to the Minister for the Capital Territory. Has the Islamic Society of the Australian Capital Territory been refused permission to build extensions to the Canberra mosque at Yarralumla? Did the Minister take this decision on the advice of his Department? What reasons has he given for the decision? Is he aware that the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils is deeply concerned by the decision and that it is regarded by some Muslims as an act of discrimination against the Islamic faith?

Mr STALEY (CHISHOLM, VICTORIA) (Minister for the Capital Territory) - The decision which I made concerning the mosque is in no way related to the matters touched upon by the honourable member. The decision was based entirely upon the residential nature of the district in which the proposed development was to take place. I will be notifying my reasons in writing shortly.
