Mr MATHEWS (CASEY, VICTORIA) -Is the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs aware of concern over the investigatory techniques used by police in the Northern Territory? Can he say what measures the Government has in mind to overcome the difficulties? Is he in favour of a royal commission to look into the subject?

Mr Les Johnson (HUGHES, NEW SOUTH WALES) -I am aware of the recent disclosures about police investigation techniques in the Northern Territory. I am concerned about them and I am similarly concerned with the whole question of Aboriginal-police relations. The Government has a commitment to the holding of a royal commission in the Northern Territory and I am currently engaged in consultations with the Attorney-General as to the terms of reference of that royal commission.
