Mr Garland asked the Minister representing the Attorney-General, upon notice:

(1)   Has the Attorney-General's attention been drawn to the reply by the Minister for Services and Property to my question No. 174 (Hansard, 16 May 1973, page 2250), in which he suggested that details relating to occupancies by Commonwealth authorities in buildings not owned by the Commonwealth should be obtained from the Ministers concerned.

(2)   Will the Attorney-General provide details, as set out in that question, of all places occupied by the Attorney-General's Department and by authorities under the Attorney-General's control in buildings not owned by, the Commonwealth.


Mr Enderby - The answers to the honourable member's questions are as follows:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   Yes. The Attorney-General's Department and authorities under the control of the Attorney-General occupy premises in each State that are not Commonwealth owned. The Department of Services and

Property is responsible for each of the buildings occupied and pays the rentals concerned. The numbers of buildings occupied in each State are as follows:

New South Wales 10 Victoria 4 Queensland 7 South Australia . . 7 Western Australia 4 Tasmania 6

The range of rentals paid in each State is: New South Wales - $0.77-$8.00 per square foot; Victoria - $2.70-$5.42 per square foot; Queensland - $1.97-$5.35 per square foot; South Australia - $2.50-$4.80 per square foot; Western Australia - $2.10-$4.00 per square foot; Tasmania - $1.95-$5.00 per square foot.

The range of rentals paid in each Capital city is: Canberra - $2.25-$7.1'5 per square foot; Sydney - $0.77-$8.00 per square foot; Melbourne- $2.70-$5.42 per square foot; Brisbane - $1.97-$5.'35 per square foot; Adelaide - $2.50-$4.80 per square foot; Perth - $2.10-$4.00 per square foot; Hobart- $1.95-$5.00 per square foot; Darwin - $4.3'5-$5.25 per square foot.

The average rental paid in each State is: New South Wales - $4.27 per square foot; Victoria - $3.64 per square foot; Queensland - $3.99 per square foot; South Australia - $3.69 per square foot; Western Australia - $3.07 per square foot; Tasmania - $2.81 per square foot.

The average rental paid in each Capital city is: Canberra - $4.73 per square foot; Sydney - $4.62 per square foot; Melbourne - $3.64 per square foot; Brisbane - $4.02 per square foot; Adelaide - $3.78 per square foot; Perth - $3.07 per square foot; Hobart - $2.81 per square foot; Darwin- $4.80 per square foot. The Department does not occupy space in the Australia Square Tower.
