Mr BURY (WENTWORTH, NEW SOUTH WALES) - My question is addressed to the Minister for Defence. Has the Department of Defence prepared adequate contingency plans to be ready to deploy forces in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, New Britain or Bougainville if any rebellion breaks out there after independence and proves too strong for the authorities at Port Moresby to deal with? Are there still enough men left in our shrunken, depleted and harassed Army to cope with the situation?

Mr BARNARD (BASS, TASMANIA) (Minister for Defence) - The answer to the first part of the honourable member's question is no. The answer to the second part is yes.
