Mr Whitlam asked the Minister for External Territories, upon notice:

(1) Which resident magistrates in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea are still without legal qualifications.

(2) Where are they stationed.


Mr Barnes (MCPHERSON, QUEENSLAND) (Minister for External Territories) The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) The law of the Territory does not require that Resident Magistrates should have legal professional qualifications, although Stipendiary Magistrates must be so qualified. One Resident Magistrate, Mr T. Mitchell, has a law degree and the other Resident Magistrates have had some legal training at the Australian School of Pacific Administration.

(2) Kundiawa (Mr R. N. N. Desailly) Madang (Mr R. A. J. Bentinck) Mount Hagen (Mr B. M. O'Neill) Port Moresby (Mr P. F. Sebire) Rabaul (Mr T. Mitchell)
