Mr Hayden asked the Minister for Social Services, upon notice:

(1) Has any social welfare programme of payment by the Commonwealth Government resulted in a reduction of benefit payable, or a reduction in participation, by a State Government which had, to the date of the Federal legislation, maintained a programme or made .payments similar to those then implemented by trie Commonwealth Government.

(2) [f so, what are the details of the programme or payments.

(3) Can he give full details of the resulting variations in the States' commitments.

Mr Wentworth - The .answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes.

(2) This has occurred on many occasions, and over many years. For example, on the introduction of Commonwealth age pensions, invalid pensions, widow's pensions, child endowment and unemployment benefit, existing State services in these fields were abandoned or re-structured.

(3) The' information sought is not readily available.
