Mr MENZIES (Kooyong) (Prime Minister) . - I do not withdraw the word " fascinating ", but I think that the honorable member may be interested to know that the percentage of permanents in Commonwealth employment, which was 47 per cent, at about the end of the war - I merely take that as a period - is now 63 per cent. So there has been a considerable improvement in that direction. There is, of course, a good deal of temporary and casual employment, which is quite inevitable with day-labour staff and so on; but the general idea is, without violating any of the rules of practicality, to increase, as opportunity offers, the percentage of permanent people and, as I say, the figures are very interesting. I had not known them until the honorable member raised the point - but from 47 per cent, to 63 per cent, is quite a remarkable change.
