Mr Leslie (MOORE, WESTERN AUSTRALIA) e asked the Postmaster-General, upon notice -

1.   What is the total number of telephone subscribers in the Commonwealth?

2.   What is the number of subscribers excluding those connected to exchanges in the metropolitan area of the capital cities, and, of this number, how many are connected to exchanges providing a continuous service?

3.   What is the total number of subscribers in Western Australia?

4.   V,'h:it is :he number excluding those connected to exchanges in the metropolitan area of Perth, and, of this number, how many are connected to exchanges providing a continuous service.

5.   How many rural automatic exchanges are in operation in (a) the Commonwealth; and (b) Western Australia?


Mr Davidson (DAWSON, QUEENSLAND) (Postmaster-General) - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   1,255, 1 34 lines are leased by subscribers throughout the Commonwealth.

2.   498,754 are connected to exchanges outside the metropolitan areas and of this number 438,856 are connected to continuous service exchangs

3.   71,519 lines are leased by subscribers in Western Australia.

4.   24,847 are connected to exchanges outside the Perth metropolitan area and of this number 19,344 are connected to continuous service exchanges. 5. (a) 907. (b) 85.
