Mr Swartz (DARLING DOWNS, QUEENSLAND) z asked the Minister representing the Minister for National Development, upon notice -

1.   Is a survey of the bauxite resources in the Cape York Peninsula being conducted at present?

2.   Is any estimate of the extent of the deposit yet available?

3.   What are the prospects for the establishment of treatment works, or, eventually, an aluminium plant, in this area?

Mr Fairhall - The Minister for National Development has furnished the following replies: -

1.   Prospecting for bauxite is being conducted by Enterprise Exploration Company Proprietary Limited and Aluminium Laboratories Limited.

2.   Enterprise Exploration Company Proprietary Limited has stated that deposits of 200.000.000 ions of commercial bauxite have been proved in two separate areas.

3.   Basic investigations of the economics of production of alumina are now being undertaken. Al this early stage, it is not possible to assess whether it would be technically feasible or economically sound to erect an aluminum smelter on Cape York Peninsula.
