Mr Haworth h asked the Minister for Defence Production, upon notice -

1.   How many Canberra bombers and Sabre fighters will have been produced when the production programme ends next year?

2.   Now that the programme is at an advanced stage, will he inform the House of the cost of producing each Canberra and Sabre that has been manufactured in Australia, costs to include proper allowance per unit for capital charges and appreciation on capital, plant, overheads, and other incidental items as well as the actual physical costs of manufacturing each machine?

3.   Will he show how the total unit cost of each machine is divided between these component items?

Sir ERIC HARRISON (WENTWORTH, NEW SOUTH WALES) - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   The Canberra production programme is for 48 aircraft and the Sabre programme for 91 aircraft.

2.   It is noi practicable al this stage to give the breakdown of costs as requested. However, the department is making cost studies which involve considerable adjustment because of structural modifications and manufacture of spares as well as incorporation of " in aid " equipment. Al a later stage in the project it should be practicable to give most of the information sought and this will be done.
