Mr Fadden n asked the Minister representing the Minister for Supply and Shipping, upon notice -

1.   Did thu Commonwealth erect power alcohol distilleries at (a) Warracknabeal; (6) Wallaroo; and (c) Collie.

2.   What has been the cost of erection, operation and maintenance to date of each of the three distilleries mentioned ?

3.   How many gallons of alcohol have been produced by each?

4.   What is the present weekly cost of maintenance of each ?

a.   What does the Government propose as the future use of each of these distilleries?

Mr Dedman n. - The Minister for Supply and Shipping has supplied the following answers: - ].. Yes.

2.   The final estimated cost of erection is -


The distilleries have never been operated because wheat has not been available for use as raw material for power alcohol owing to drought conditions. Details of maintenance costs are not immediately available, and will be furnished to the right honorable member on completion of investigations being undertaken by my department.

3.   No power alcohol has been produced at the distilleries mentioned. °

4.   The cost of maintenance is approximately £140 per week for each distillery.

5.   Future utilization of the distilleries at Warracknabeal, Wallaroo and Collie is at present under consideration by the Secondary Industries Commission. Inquiry into practicable post-war uses' of anhydrous alcohol for industrial purposes is 'being made.
