Dr PRICE (BOOTHBY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA) e asked the Treasurer, upon notice -

1.   What amount of money was subscribed to State lotteries in all States during the taxation years 1940-41 and 1941-42?

2.   What would he the amount of money obtainable by the Federal Government for 1942-43 if it imposed a tax of 10 per centum on the face value of lottery tickets in all States?

Mr Chifley - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows : -

1.   Subscriptions for year ended 30th June. 1940, were£ 5,465,000 and for the year ended 30th June, 1941, £4,955,000. Information in regard to the subscriptions for the year ended 30th June, 1942, is not yet available:

2.   If the above rate of reduction, in subscriptions is maintained subscriptions for the year ended 30th June, 1943, would be approximately £4,000,000. Ten per cent. of this amount is £400,000. However, as one-fourth of the year has expired the revenue which would be obtained for 1942-43 from such a tax is estimated at £300,000.
