Mr HOLLOWAY (MELBOURNE, VICTORIA) - The provision might be made to apply to the wives of life prisoners, just as it applies to the wives1 of insane men, who are generally kept in institutions for the remainder of their lives. I cannot see how the honorable member's proposal could be incorporated1 in this legislation.

Mr Calwell - Why not? Similar provision is made in the legislation of other countries.

Mr HOLLOWAY - I cannot give a promise now. The honorable member for Darling (Mr.. Clark) referred to a matter which on more than one occasion has been considered by Cabinet. To give effect to his1 proposal would cost £650,000 for the known cases. His arguments appealed very strongly to me, but the- provision be seeks cannot be made in this bill because of the budgetary position. I assure him that his proposal will be one of the next to be considered.
