Senator WITHERS (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) -My question is directed to the Minister for Foreign Affairs. I ask this question in an attempt to ensure that an out of hand diplomatic shambles like the Ermolenko affair will never happen again in Australia. I ask: Will the Minister assure the Senate that clear, precise directions will be given to officers of his Department instructing them how to behave and what steps should be taken when requests for political asylum are made?

Senator WILLESEE (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) (Minister for Foreign Affairs) - If there were any instructions to go out as to how people should behave in situations such as that which arose in this sad affair, I would be giving those instructions to certain people who are not in the Department of Foreign Affairs.
