Senator DRAKE-BROCKMAN (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) - My question is addressed to the Minister for Customs and Excise. In what way is his action to withdraw the petroleum subsidy for non-metropolitan areas consistent with the provisions of the Industries Assistance Commission Act and in particular section 23 which requires that long standing financial assistance cannot be withdrawn unless a report of the Industries Assistance Commission on the matter has been received? Will the Minister consider providing the Senate with details of the Government's legal position on this decision, particularly as he seems to have the overwhelming approval of Caucus for his action?

Senator MURPHY -I do not quite understand the cryptic remark in the last sentence of the honourable senator's question. As to the early part, the honourable senator has asked a question of law. I will consider whether I should supply some information in regard to it.
