Senator Douglas McClelland (NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Minister representing the PostmasterGeneral, upon notice:

(J)   In the year ended 30lh June 1971, which firms received contracts for the supply of telecommunication equipment, and what was the value of each contract.

(2)   How many, of these firms are (a) Australianowned and (b) foreign-owned.

Senator GREENWOOD The PostmasterGeneral has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1)   During 1971, contracts and contract amendments issued by the Post Office totalled 7,445. To provide the detailed information sought by the honourable senator would involve a detailed analysis of all these documents. This would require a major research effort. In reply to a question asked by the honourable member for St George on House of Representatives Notice Paper No. 113 of 8th September 1971, details were provided of contracts placed for 16 major categories of telecommunication material and equipment and for motor vehicles and mechanical aids during the 3 years ending 30th /une 1971. This information appears on page No. 2136 of Hansard Volume House of Representatives, No. 74, for the period 28th September to 4th November 1971. Whilst this information does not cover all contracts placed or all firms receiving contracts, it does cover major purchases and major suppliers. I suggest that the honourable senator checks this information to see if it meets his needs.

(2)   Whilst ownership of the major suppliers is known to the Post Office; information regarding the ownership of many other suppliers is not known. To provide this information could involve reference to the Registrar of Companies in the several States and Territories. If the honourable senator is interested particularly in any supplier or group of suppliers and, if he lets me know I will arrange for the information to be provided.
