Senator MULVIHILL asked the Minis ter representing the Minister for Shipping and Transport, upon notice:

(1)   When Ampol Petroleum Ltd chartered the Oceanic Grandeur from its Liberian owners, Oceanic Petroleum Carriers, did Ampol Petroleum Ltd automatically assume insurance coverage by virtue of TOVALOP membership, or any other insurance coverage, against oil spillage.

(2)   Are the Liberian owners of the Oceanic Grandeur members of TOVALOP, or any other private insurance indemnification fund against oil pollution damage.

(3)   If the answers to (1) and (2) are in the negative, do existing Commonwealth laws fill the breach as regards oil pollution damage claims on the Australian coast.


Senator COTTON The Minister for Shipping and Transport has provided the following answers to the honourable senator's question:

(1)   No.

(2)   Oceanic Petroleum Carriers Inc., owners of the 'Oceanic Grandeur' are members of TOVALOP.

(3)   This does not apply as the answer to question (2) is not in the negative.
