Senator MILLINER (QUEENSLAND) - Has the Minister representing the Minister for Shipping and Transport seen the comments by 2 visiting American automobile executives that current Australian car models lag four to five years behind their American counterparts in anti-pollution devices? Does the Government intend to act so that Australian motor vehicles will be required to at least meet American standards of pollution control?

Senator COTTON - No, I have not seen the comments by the visiting American experts. 1 shall be glad to have them from the honourable senator if he will give them to me afterwards. In general I am aware that the motor car is the principal cause of air pollution in great cities. To the extent that this can be removed or diminished in Australia, I am sure that it will have the support of the responsible Minister.
