Senator TOWNLEY (TASMANIA) - Will the Minister for Health say how long it is since the Commonwealth Department of Health carried out a survey into the nutritional needs of the people of this country? Has the Commonwealth Department of Health ever investigated whether people on low incomes are financially capable of buying the food they need, from a health point of view? Are any of them suffering from malnutrition, as some people claim to be the case?

Senator Sir KENNETH ANDERSON I certainly would like to have notice of that question. As the honourable senator knows, the time that I have held the portfolio of Minister for Health would not allow me off the cuff to give the history of investigations which may or may not have taken place in the Department of Health in relation to the overall question of the nutritional standards of some 13 million people in the community. I do not know the answer to the honourable senator's question but I will obtain it and make it available.
