Senator PEARCE (Western Australia) (Minister for Defence) . - I think that the British preference should be 10 per cent., but I would prefer to retain the proposed duty of 5 per cent, on unassembled chassis in the British preferential column, and increase the duty in the general Tariff to 15 per cent. I think that these chassis should bear some taxation. It should be remembered that, as a general rule, the British car is a higherpriced car than the American, and it would, therefore, be wiser to increase the rate of duty on the American car. If the duty on the British and American cars were the same the revenue collected on the American car would be only about one-half of the revenue collected on the British car. In the circumstances, if Senator Pratten will submit a request for an increase in the duty in the general Tariff from 10 per cent, to 15 per cent. I will accept that.
