Mr Bennett asked the Minister representing the Minister for Customs and Excise, upon notice:

(1)   Have there been delays of up to two hours for passengers clearing customs at Perth Airport after a Jumbo Jet flight of in excess of 26 hours from London.

(2)   If so, will the Minister investigate the situation to see what equipment and procedures are required to speed up the process.

Dr J F Cairns - The Minister for Customs and Excise has provided the following information for answer to the honourable member's question:

(1)   On two recent occasions there has been some delay in the clearance of Jumbo Jet passengers arriving at Perth Airport after long flights from London. The delay has been caused because of the arrival of the jumbo jet at approximately the same time as two other international aircraft. The clearance time of two hours however, relates to the clearance of all passengers from the three aircraft.

(2)   Customs clearance procedures at Perth Airport are the same as those employed at other Australian international airports. However, terminal facilities at Perth were designed and brought into use before the advent of large passenger capacity aircraft, such as the B747. The Comptroller-General of Customs has written to the Director-General of Civil Aviation with a view to the provision of more adequate terminal accommodation, particularly transit passenger facilities, at Perth.
