Mr King asked the Postmaster-General, upon notice:

(1)   How many telephone exchanges classified as country automatic are there in each State.

(2)   How many were installed in each State under the conditions introduced by the previous PostmasterGeneral which provided for a15-mile free line construction scheme.


Mr LIONEL BOWEN (KINGSFORD-SMITH, NEW SOUTH WALES) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   The number of country automatic exchanges in service in each State is:

 

(2)   The number of country automatic exchanges installed in each State between August 1970 and August 1973, the currency of the policy mentioned, was as follows:

 

The policy to which the honourable member refers had to do solely with the provision or upgrading of exchange lines for subscribers and applied where service was provided from manual as well as automatic exchanges. The number of subscribers' lines provided or upgraded under that policy and which, under the arrangements operating prior to that policy, would have involved part of the line being privately constructed and maintained, is as follows:
