Dr Forbes (BARKER, SOUTH AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice:

(1)   Did he say in his address to the National Press Club on IS March 1973 that decisions about the future structure of our Armed Forces and the kind of equipment which they will need must be made in the light of our new national goals.

(2)   If so, what new national goals did he have in mind.

Mr Barnard - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   The national goals I had in mind are our own national security; an independent Papua New Guinea, well disposed to Australia; closer relations with our nearest and largest neighbour, Indonesia; and the peace and prosperity of our neighbourhood.
