Mr Wallis (GREY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA) asked the Postmaster-General, upon notice:

(1)   How many rural automatic exchanges have been installed by his Department in the Electoral Division of Grey during the last 4 years.

(2)   Where have they been installed, at what cost, and how many subscribers are connected to each of these exchanges.

Mr Lionel Bowen (KINGSFORD-SMITH, NEW SOUTH WALES) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Nine.

Note 1: The Port Lincoln, Port Pirie and Port Augusta installations provided for STD access to the National Grid for 6, 8 and 1 terminal exchanges respectively.

Note 2: In addition, the costs of providing STD access to the National Grid at Whyalla was $33,000.
