Mr Kerin asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice:

(1)   What was the value of Australian aid to the Cook Islands from the date of independence to 31st December 1972.

(2)   What form did this aid take.

(3)   Which Australian private agencies in receipt of financial support from the Australian Government are active in the Cook Islands.

(4)   Can he say what assistance these agencies have given to the Cook Islands from the date of independence to 31st December 1972.

(5)   What was the extent of Australian Government assistance to these agencies.


Mr Whitlam - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   The Cook Islands became self-governing on 4th August 1965. Australia's official aid to the Cook Islands commenced in 1972. Up to 3 1st December 1972 the value of Australian official aid amounted to SA2.697.

(2)   Aid has taken the form of training awards. A small amount of project aid has also been offered.

(3)   , (4) and (5) There are no Australian private agencies in receipt of financial support from the Australian Government, active in the Cook Islands.
