Mr Kerin asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice:

(1)   What was the value of Australian aid to Tonga from the date of independence to 31st December 1972.

(2)   What form did this aid take.

(3)   Which Australian private agencies in receipt of financial support from the Australian Government are active in Tonga.

(4)   Can he say what assistance these agencies have given to Tonga from the date of independence to 31st December 1972.

(5)   What was the extent of Australian Government assistance to these agencies.

Mr Whitlam - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Tonga became independent on 4th June 1970. The value of Australian official aid from 31st July to 31st December 1972 amounted to SA343.333.

(2)   Aid has taken the form of the provision of experts and equipment for development projects as well as allocation of training awards.

(3)   The Overseas Service Bureau is the only Australian voluntary and organisation receiving assistance from the Government, active in Tonga.

(4)   The Overseas Service Bureau in administering the Australian Volunteers Abroad Scheme has sent 5 volunteers to Tonga (2 in 1970, one in 1971, and 2 in 1972).

(5)   The extent of Government assistance for sending these volunteers was $3,086.
