Mr Whitlam asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice:

(1)   In which countries are there diplomatic missions from both Australia and the People's Republic of China.

(2)   Did the 2 meetings between the Australia!, and Chinese ambassadors in Paris, to which the Prime Minister referred on 17th July 1971, take place on 27th May and 2nd July.

(3)   In which countries did Chinese ambassadors make the representations to which the Prime Minister referred on 16th September 1971 (Hansard, pages 1401 and 1404).


Mr N H Bowen (PARRAMATTA, NEW SOUTH WALES) - The answers to the honourable member's questions are as follows:

(1)   Both Australia and the People's Republic of China have diplomatic missions in the Arab Republic of Egypt, Austria, Burma, Ceylon, Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, India, Iran, Italy, Kenya, Laos, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, United Kingdom, USSR and Yugoslavia.

(2)   Yes.

(3)   It is not my intention to reveal the details of these confidential meetings.
